Jashaun Hawkins first Yeti named All-American
Yetis' standout player, Jashaun Hawkins, was named DII Men's Basketball Player of the Year for Region 10 and First-Team All-Region. In addition, he was named a Second Team All-American by the NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball Committee. The sophomore guard averaged an impressive 20.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
"We are so excited to know that one of our athletes was not only our Region's Player of the Year, but also named as our first All-American," said Dr. Jason Hurst, president of Cleveland Community College. "I saw Jashaun play numerous times this season and we're thrilled to see his exceptional abilities rewarded."
Hawkins, who came to the Yetis from Southern Durham High School, said his brother got him interested in basketball when he was six years old, and he's been playing ever since. "It feels amazing (to be recognized) and I'm very proud of myself," said Hawkins. "It means a lot to be recognized with these awards at a first-year program."
Hawkins helped his team to finish its first season with a 16-6 conference record and an overall record of 17-13, securing the second position in the conference standings. "The entire coaching staff could tell that Jashaun was going to be special," said Head Coach Grayson Pierce. "I remember telling him at practice one day that he could be an All-American. I am proud and happy for him."
Yetis Athletic Director Dr. Andy Gardner added, "While we are still new in NJCAA athletics, our athletes have already made the Yetis proud. We are grateful to Jashaun for helping establish a strong foundation for our men's basketball program and wish him continued success at the next level."
Hawkins was offered a full scholarship to Catawba College and has committed to continuing his basketball career there. After college he hopes to continue playing in an overseas league.
