Women's Basketball Season Wrap-Up
Last fall, the Yetis women's basketball team embarked on their inaugural season with grit, determination, and a strong spirit. Despite facing many challenges, including a small roster and injuries, they emerged as warriors on the court, leaving a lasting mark on the conference landscape.
Much of the season was a battle, but there were highlights, moments where the women showcased their resilience, earning them six conference wins in their first season. Though their home record stood at 4-9, the tenacity these women displayed gave fans a glimpse of the future and the program Coach Scooter Lawrence is building.
Hopes for the future grew with a singular moment of triumph that defined the season – a clash against the formidable third-ranked Louisburg College. Despite the odds stacked against them and facing a team boasting a stellar 20-4 record, our Yetis refused to be intimidated. With steely determination and unwavering resolve, they rose to the occasion, securing a remarkable victory that reverberated throughout the conference.
Individually, two shining stars emerged. Ravin Brooks' lightning-quick reflexes and sharpshooting led to her being ranked fourth in the conference in points scored. Meanwhile, Grace East showcased her defensive skills, finishing in the top five in steals, a testament to her relentless pursuit of victory on both ends of the court.
However, the team's journey was not without its statistical challenges averaging 59.4 points per game, they faced an uphill battle in converting opportunities into points. They struggled on the offensive boards, yet refused to quit, fighting to make their presence felt in every game.
"I thought the ladies played hard and gave me everything they had. We were competitive even with low numbers in the roster. I am proud of where we are headed," says Lawrence.
On the defensive end, the women's team proved to be a formidable force, averaging 10.6 steals, and forcing 18.4 turnovers per game, they showcased their ability to disrupt opponents' offensive rhythm.
Despite finishing with a record of 6-22, this team announced to the conference that the Yetis are fierce competitors. "We are excited about the future of Yetis women's basketball and the possibilities of building a strong, competitive program," says Lawrence. As they look toward the future, one thing is certain – the Lady Yetis basketball team is just getting started.
