For the first time in program history, the Cleveland Community College women's basketball team took the national stage after capturing the Region 10 Championship—marking a milestone moment for the Lady Yetis. Competing at the NJCAA Division II National Championship Tournament hosted at Catawba Valley Community College, the Yetis delivered a strong showing in front of a packed and supportive fan base that made the trip to cheer them on.
Round 1: Cleveland 55, Moraine Valley 46
The Yetis opened tournament play with a gritty defensive performance, holding Moraine Valley to just 26.7% shooting in a 55-46 victory.
Kari Lee led the charge with 14 points and seven rebounds, setting the tone offensively. De'Mya Phifer added 11 points and six boards, while Sydnie Enste dominated the glass with a double-double effort of nine points and 12 rebounds.
Jada Whitesides contributed nine points and made her presence felt defensively with four steals, helping the Yetis force 20 turnovers. Cleveland's defense and rebounding edge proved to be the difference, as they controlled the tempo late and pulled away in the fourth quarter.
Round 2: Cleveland 58, Johnson County 83
Facing an undefeated Johnson County squad in the second round, the Yetis battled but ultimately fell 83-58 against one of the top teams in the nation.
Kari Lee once again led Cleveland with 17 points, adding four rebounds, three assists, and three steals in an all-around performance. De'Mya Phifer chipped in 10 points, while Kiya Shavers added eight points, knocking down two three-pointers.
The Yetis showed resilience, outscoring Johnson County in the third quarter and staying competitive through stretches of the game. However, Johnson County's depth and efficiency proved difficult to overcome down the stretch.
A Season to Remember
While their tournament run came to an end in the second round, the Lady Yetis' historic season will be remembered as a defining moment for the program. From capturing their first Region 10 title to competing on the national stage, Cleveland showcased its growth, toughness, and competitive spirit.
